I would try finding information on those races, starting with the perceptions detailed in famous books. For example: J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, Christopher Paolini's The Inheritance Cycle (Eragon, Eldest, & Brisingr), J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter Series, and anything else you can think of.
